What is Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy (PRP)?
Platelet rich plasma is a new procedure of hair rejuvenation where there is bio stimulation of the stem cells of the dermis using an injection technique which uses the patient’s platelet rich plasma (PRP) which is extracted from your own blood.
How Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy (PRP) works
PRP is a biological therapy. Prepared plasma is richer in platelets than normal blood. The plasma contain growth factors which have significant positive effects on hair growth. The platelet growth factors induce follicle stem cells to shift from a dormant state to an active state which starts the process of hair production. The platelet growth factors can “wake up” dormant hair follicles and begin the production of new hair. So this therapy gives strength to the existing hair, reduces hair loss and is likely to increase the actual number and quality of hairs by stimulating the cells.
How you can benefit from Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Therapy (PRP)
Both male & female patients with thinning but not completely bald areas are the best candidates. Earlier treatment is better and may postpone or reduce the need for surgical hair transplants. Patients with surgical hair transplants can also benefit from PRP, yielding increased graft survival, improved donor scare healing, faster recovery and improved hair growth.
How long is the PRP procedure?
Completed in less than 60 minutes, the PRP contains the concentrated growth factors and protein to super charge and stimulate hair follicle stem cells and initiate improved hair growth. The minimum recommendation is four PRP scalp injections done 6-8 weeks apart.
When will I start to see the effects of PRP?
This varies among individuals. Generally you can start seeing a benefit in three to six months. The maximum benefit is seen at twelve months. Improved hair appearance may last two to three years but then there will be a gradual return of the hair to its baseline without continued PRP therapy. This is why we suggest a series of three annual treatments (one every four months) to maintain hair growth.
